Tree Trimming in Huntsville, AL
A good trim keeps limbs off the roof, lets light into the yard and takes out the dead wood before a storm does it for you. Call (256) 801-0424 and we’ll connect you with a local tree company that does trimming and pruning.
Common reasons to trim
- Branches touching or hanging over the roof. They scrape shingles, fill gutters and give squirrels a ladder.
- Dead or broken limbs high in the canopy, especially over the house, driveway or a play area.
- Low limbs over the driveway, sidewalk or street.
- Thinning a big oak or hickory so wind passes through instead of pushing the whole crown.
- A Bradford pear that’s started to split. Trimming can buy time, but these often end up needing removal.
When to trim
Late winter, while trees are dormant, is a good time for most routine pruning: crews can see the branch structure, and the cuts start closing as spring growth begins. Dead, broken or dangerous limbs should come off any time of year.
What good trimming looks like
- Cuts just outside the branch collar, not flush with the trunk and not leaving stubs.
- No “topping.” Cutting a tree’s top off flat leads to weak regrowth and decay. If a company suggests topping a healthy tree, get another opinion.
- No climbing spikes on trees that are staying. Spikes wound the bark; they’re for removals only.
Trimming near power lines
Don’t trim, or let anyone trim, branches near overhead power lines unless they’re qualified for line clearance work. Call Huntsville Utilities (or your power company outside the city) first.
Do I need an arborist?
For clearing limbs off the roof, a good tree company is plenty. If you want to save a large, valuable tree that looks sick or damaged, ask for an ISA Certified Arborist to look at it first.
We connect homeowners with tree companies serving Huntsville, Madison, Harvest, Meridianville, Hazel Green, New Market, Owens Cross Roads and Gurley.
