What to do right now

  1. Get people and pets away from the tree and out of any room it hit.
  2. Stay far back from power lines. If a tree or limb is touching a line, assume it’s live and call Huntsville Utilities (or your power company) before anyone goes near it.
  3. Don’t climb on the roof or cut anything under tension. Trunks and limbs pinned by a fallen tree can snap back hard.
  4. Take photos of the tree and the damage from a safe spot. Your insurance company and the tree company will both want them.
  5. Call your homeowners insurance to start a claim, then call a tree company to get it off the house.

When it’s an emergency

Why storms hit Huntsville trees hard

North Alabama gets strong storms, and the City of Huntsville saw trees down across Monte Sano and along Dug Hill Road after an EF-1 tornado in spring 2025. Tall loblolly pines can snap in high wind, and big oaks with shallow or damaged roots can tip over in soaked ground. Bradford pears are a common problem in older yards: Alabama Extension notes the variety is structurally weak because of how its branches grow, and they often split down the middle in a storm.

City tree or your tree?

If the tree that fell was on City of Huntsville property or in the right-of-way, contact the City’s Landscape Management department. They may handle the cleanup. If it was your tree, or on an easement, removing it is usually the property owner’s job, even if it landed in the street. In Madison, contact the City of Madison about city trees.

What emergency removal involves

Getting a tree off a roof safely usually takes a crew with rigging, and often a crane or bucket truck, to lift the tree off in pieces without dropping more weight on the house. Expect emergency work to cost more than a planned removal. See typical costs →
